Mountains-to-sea trail - by Josh Shaffer. Scot Ward has trekked the Mountains-to-Sea Trail end to end — about a thousand miles from Clingman’s Dome to Jockey’s Ridge — four times. Along the way, he’s startled a mama bear and her three cubs, he’s camped out back of a church and used its spigot for a bath, and he’s pushed through the darkness of five tunnels.

As the Mountains to Sea Trail marks 45 years of history, we look ahead to the next 45 years and beyond to where the trail will take us.Red Mill Road (North of Ellerbe Creek) to Red Mill Road (South of the Eno River) Distance: 4.6 miles. Day Hike T: End of the Line (or the Beginning) Red Mill Road to Penny’s Bend. Day Hike 1: West Point on the Eno City Park. Distance: 1.6 miles, plus 0.1-mile connector trail. Distance: 2.6 miles, plus 0.3-mile connector trail.Piggyback trail: Falls Lake Trail, a/k.a South Shore Trail. Connecting trails: Occasional trail upslope to neighborhoods and down to the lake. Falls Lake MST Section No.: 4. Trailhead/Access: Possum Track Road and Bayleaf Church Road.
